1 second, 2 seconds, sometimes 3 seconds or more: Silence – the dialer is searching for an available agent – the called party is thinking “uh oh, this is a telemarketing call” and getting defensive, or just hanging up.

¼ second: Agent intro recording plays – for example the called party might hear “Hi, this is Bonnie with Metro Capital, how are you?”. When this recording ends, the agent hears a “beep” and is connected with the called party, who responds to the intro recording. The called party never hears a delay, and the agent is right there to respond, live.
It’s simply a better design.
